The No. 18 Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team opens the 2019-20 regular season this week at the Regional Challenge in Aberdeen, S.D. MSUM will face No. 11 Central Missouri at 2 p.m. on Friday and follow with a game against Rogers State (Okla.) at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The Dragons are coming off of a 27-7 season which saw them win their first NCAA tournament game in a decade and their third straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships. The Dragons have also won four straight NSIC North Division crowns.
MSUM returns three starters from that team plus has the addition of former Fargo Shanley standout guard
Sarah Jacobson, who transferred from North Dakota State.
Senior forward
Megan Hintz, an All-NSIC First-Team selection last season, averaged a double-double at 15.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Senior forward
Madi Green averaged 7.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
Junior guard
Lauren Fech started 19 of the 34 games she appeared in last season while sophomore guard
Nicole Herbranson started 12 of the 33 games she appeared in a year ago. Also returning with playing experience are junior guard
Brooklyn Liegel (30 three-pointers last season), sophomore forward
Peyton Boom (51.8 field goal percentage), sophomore guard
Natalie Steichen, sophomore center
Nicole Brown and sophomore guard
Emma Thuringer.
Karla Nelson is in her 20th season at MSUM with a record of 352-195.
About Central Missouri
No. 11 Central Missouri finished last season 25-7 overall and 15-4 in the MIAA. The team advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament before losing to Southwestern Oklahoma State.
Central Missouri returns All-MIAA performers Morgan Fleming and Megan Skaggs. They also added NJCAA Division II Player of the Year Nija Collier. Fleming averaged 15.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game a year ago while Skaggs averaged 15.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Senior Kim Crown averaged 8.3 points per game a year ago.
Dave Slifer is in his 16th season as the UCM head coach with a record of 306-146 at the school.
About Rogers State
Rogers State is joining the MIAA this year after competing in the Heartland Conference previously. They finished last season 14-14 overall. They were throttled by Division I foe Nebraska, 97-33 in an exhibition game earlier this month. They were picked to finish 13th in the MIAA preseason coaches poll.
The Hillcats return two starters from the 2018-19 season in seniors Alicia Brown and Azaria Floyd. The Hillcats also return senior Darian Jackson, who started every game a year ago and junior Lilly Garner, who played in every game last season.
Kyle Bent is in his second season as the Rogers State head coach.
