BISMARCK, N.D. — Despite having five players in double figures, the No. 24/22 Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team fell to the University of Mary on Friday, dropping an 89-68 decision to the Marauders at the McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck, N.D.
MSUM fell to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with the loss while UMary improved to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the league.
The Marauders shot 50.8 percent (31-of-61) from the field compared to 45.6 percent (26-of-57) for MSUM. The Dragons shot just 4-of-19 from the three-point line, however.
Mary outrebounded MSUM 36-29.
Sophomore forward
Peyton Boom led MSUM with a career-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Junior guard
Sarah Jacobson had 12 points and four assists while senior forward
Megan Hintz had 11 points and four rebounds. Senior forward
Madi Green had 10 points and five rebounds while sophomore guard
Natalie Steichen had 10 points, three assists and three teals.
After a close first quarter which saw Mary lead 17-16, the Dragons scored eight of the next 10 points, keyed by a three-pointer from junior guard
Brooklyn Liegel and a three-point play from Hintz, to take a 24-19 lead with 8:57 left in the first half. The Marauders outscored MSUM 22-10 over the rest of the half to take a 41-34 lead into halftime.
MSUM tied the game at 43-43 with 6:21 left in the third on a Boom bucket, but the Marauders outscored MSUM 20-7 over the rest of the quarter to secure a 13-point lead going into the final quarter.
The Marauders opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 20 on their way to the win.
MSUM plays at Minot State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
