MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team lost a pair of nonconference games to conclude the Dragon-Beaver Battle on Wednesday, falling to Bemidji State, 6-4 in nine innings and Southwest Minnesota State, 9-1 in five innings. The games were held at the West St. Paul Dome in West St. Paul, Minn.
MSUM is 0-4 on the season.
MSUM lost a heartbreaker to Bemidji State to open the day. The Dragons led 4-0 before Bemidji rallied to send the game to extra innings. A walkoff two-run homer gave the Beavers the win.
Sophomore pitcher
Becky Berth was 2-for-3 with a homer and an RBI while sophomore first baseman
Ashley McCance was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Redshirt freshman outfielder
Samantha Gjerde was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
Berth received a no-decision on the mound, giving up four earned runs in 6.1 innings. She struck out four and walked none. Freshman pitcher
Anna Lang took the loss, giving up two earned runs in 2.1 innings.
A McCance RBI single scored senior shortstop
Taylor Roddie in the first inning. Earlier in the inning Gjerde scored on an error after reaching on a walk to help MSUM build a 2-0 lead.
MSUM lead pushed the lead to 4-0 in the second. Berth hit her first homer of the season to make it 3-0 while Gjerde scored on an error.
The Dragons finished with five hits but also left 10 runners on base and committed four errors.
Against SMSU, Gjerde was 2-for-3 with a run scored while freshman outfielder
Shay Weber was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior
Payton Gaber, Berth and freshman third baseman
Kaiya Sundeen were each 1-for-2.
Lang took the loss, giving up five runs in one inning. Berth pitched the remainder of the game and gave up four earned runs.
MSUM's lone run came in the third when Weber hit a double to score Gjerde, who singled to lead off the inning.
The Dragons will compete at the Minot State tournament on Feb. 22-23.
