MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team will travel to St. Peter, Minn. to face Gustavus Adolphus College and NSIC foes Southwest
Minnesota State and Minnesota State, Mankato. The match against Gustavus Adolphus is set to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the match against Southwest Minnesota State to follow at 5:30 p.m. The Dragons will face Minnesota State on Sunday at 8 a.m.
The Dragons are off to a 2-1 start this season with a 7-0 win over Concordia College to start the year. Last week MSUM opened Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition with a 7-0 win over University of Sioux Falls and a 7-0 loss to conference powerhouse Augustana University.
In the match versus Sioux Falls, the Dragons won all three doubles matches with
Julia Geske and
Olivia Keelin picking up a 6-2 win at No. 1, freshman
Rachel Nguyen and sophomore
Lorissa Yuen winning 7-5 at No. 2, and freshmen
Jalyn Kornblum and
Stevi Parker winning 6-4 at No. 3. Geske picked up a win at No. 1 singles (4-6, 6-2, 10-7) while Yuen rolled past Quandt, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Nguyen topped Miller, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 while junior
Alexis Konecne won at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1 over Joelle Thorfinnson. Keelin won 6-1, 6-1 at five singles while Kornblum earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 to complete the sweep.
In the match against Augustana the Vikings swept all three doubles matches. Keeling fell 6-4. 6-4 at No. 5 singles after a tough battle. Konecne fell 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Kornblum dropped a 6-4, 6-3 match at No. 6 singles. MSUM battled tough against an Augustana team that has won 101 straight NSIC matches.
About Gustavus Adolphus
Gustavus is 4-1 with their lone loss coming against Minnesota State (6-3). They have defeated Bethany Lutheran, Mount Marty, St. Scholastica, and Saint Mary's. Senior Bri Hartmann was named MIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after posting a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and an 8-1 No. 1 doubles victory at Saint Mary's. Hartmann won her singles and doubles match against St. Scholastica as well.
About Southwest Minnesota State
The Mustangs are 6-1 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC after a 1-6 loss to Winona State and a 4-0 win over Upper Iowa last week. Freshman Daniela Flores won SMSU's lone singles match against Winona State at No. 4. Sophomore Cora Delich and junior Hannah Starke won their doubles match at No. 3 versus Winona State. The Mustangs earned the doubles point against Upper Iowa as sophomore Fatima Murphy and sophomore Olivia Watzke won at No. 1, while SMSU won via forfeit at No. 3 doubles. Freshman Hannah Himmelman won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to help defeat UIU. MSUM defeated SMSU 7-2 last season.
About Minnesota State, Mankato
The Mavericks are 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC after a 1-6 loss to Winona State and a 5-2 win over Upper Iowa last week. The Mavericks have nonconference wins over Gustavus Adolphus and Northwestern College. Minnesota State have combined for a 5-1 record in No. 1 singles this season and have 16 singles victories this season. Erin Streeter is 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 1-2 in No. 1 doubles matches. Monika Ryan is 2-1 in No. 2 singles matches and 1-2 in No. 1 doubles matches. MSUM defeated Minnesota State 7-2 last season.
