Dragon Women Down Upper Iowa 92-67 to Advance in NSIC/Sanford Health Tourney; Hintz Reaches 1,000 Points in Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health Tournament with a 92-67 win over Upper Iowa in action Wednesday night at Nemzek Fieldhouse. Junior Megan Hintz reached the 1,000-point milestone for her Dragon career.

MSUM advances to play Winona State at noon on Saturday at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. in the quarterfinals. Winona State beat Minot State 63-57 on Wednesday.

The Dragons (24-5) also tied their single-season record for most wins in a season.  Members of the MSUM presidential cabinet  presented MSUM with the NSIC regular-season championship trophy after the game.

Hintz had 16 points and eight rebounds and now is at exactly 1,000 for her career. Sophomore guard Kiley Borowicz had 17 points to pace a balanced Dragon attack that saw five players reach double figures. Redshirt freshman forward Peyton Boom had 15 points and seven rebounds while senior guard Jacky Volkert had 12 points and four assists. Freshman guard Nicole Herbranson had 11 points while junior forward Made Green had nine points and a team-high five assists.

The Dragons had a commanding 41-20 edge in rebounds, including 19-5 on the offensive glass.

MSUM led 43-37 at halftime thanks to a strong first half from Boom off the bench. She scored all 15 of her points in the first half.

In the third quarter MSUM pulled away thanks to a 30-point output. MSUM led by as many as 28 in the first half.

Volkert is now one assist away from tying the school career record of 488 set by Krista Opheim.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game:  The Dragons are now 12-8 in first-round NSIC tournament games and have won six straight first rounders at home since falling 61-48 to St. Cloud State on Mar. 4, 2009.
