CLERMONT, Fla. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team picked up two wins on its Florida trip on Thursday, beating Nyack College 7-5 and Franklin Pierce 4-0. MSUM is now 4-3 on its Florida trip so far.
In the opening game vs. Nyack, MSUM (4-11) battled back from a 4-0 deficit to earn the win.
Freshman outfielder
Jordey Smith was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI while freshman catcher
Jordie McNeilly was 1-for-3 with three RBI. Freshman infielder
Ally Helgoe had a double and an RBI. Sophomore outfielder
Elizabeth Johnson was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior infielder
Taylor Roddie and junior designated hitter
Payton Gaber were each 1-for-3.
Freshman
Anna Lang got the win, going six innings and allowing five runs, four earned. She struck out four and walked one. Berth picked up her second save of the season by pitching a scoreless seventh.
Nyack scored four runs in the first to take a 4-0 lead. MSUM battled back with a five-run second inning. Helgoe and McCance hit back-to-back while McNeilly hit a three-run homer to put the Dragons in front 5-4.
The lead grew to 7-4 in the fourth as Johnson singled, and one out later scored on Smith's home run to make it 7-4.
"We played great softball today," MSUM head coach
Amanda Reckamp said. "We fought back in Game 1 after a rough start which is something we haven't done consistently. Jordie and Jordey hit home runs to put five on the board for us and that was big time to gain the momentum."
Lang pitched into the seventh before giving way to Berth. Nyack got a run to cut the lead to 7-5 but Berth got the final out to secure the win.
Berth pitched a stellar outing in Game 2, firing a one-hitter. She struck out two and walked one.
"Becky had one of her best outings so far, throwing a 1-hitter," Reckamp said. "She was on today and set the tone for the game."
Gaber was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI while redshirt freshman
Samantha Gjerde was 1-for-3 with a double and RBI. Smith was 1-for-2 with an RBI while Johnson and junior third baseman
Emma Dummer added hits.
MSUM got on the board with Gaber driving in Berth with an RBI double, making it 1-0 in the third. In the sixth MSUM added three key insurance runs, as Gjerde hit an RBI double and Smith hit an RBI single. Roddie scored on a passed ball.
MSUM wraps up its Florida trip with two games on Friday. The Dragons will face the University of the Sciences (Pa.) at 8:45 a.m. Central time and follow with a game against Alderson Broaddus at 1 p.m. CT on Friday.
