ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team dropped a pair of games to St. Cloud State on Wednesday, losing 8-3 and 13-5 at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud, Minn.
MSUM fell to 11-20 overall and 5-9 in the NSIC while St. Cloud State improved to 27-11 overall and 9-5 in the league.
In the opener, sophomore outfielder
Elizabeth Johnson was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI while sophomore first baseman
Ashley McCance was 2-for-3 with a double. Freshman catcher
Jordie McNeilly was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman outfielder
Jordey Smith added a double while junior first baseman/DH
Payton Gaber had a hit and a run scored. Senior shortstop
Taylor Roddie added a hit and freshman
Savannah Drey scored a run.
Sophomore pitcher
Becky Berth took the loss, giving up eight runs, five earned. She struck out three.
MSUM tied the game at 1-1 thanks to Johnson's RBI single in the first which scored Gaber, who had singled early in the inning.
SCSU built a 4-1 lead but MSUM cut into the lead. Johnson's RBI double in the sixth scored Drey, and moments later, McNeilly singled to score Johnson to ut the lead to 4-3.
St. Cloud State scored four runs in the seventh to pull away 8-3.
MSUM jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Game 2, but five errors proved to be the Dragons' undoing as the Huskies scored nine unearned runs.
Smith was 3-for-3 with two runs scored in Game 2 while Roddie was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Freshman second baseman
Kaiya Sundeen was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Junior third baseman
Emma Dummer had a hit and an RBI while Johnson, McNeilly and freshman outfielder
Shay Weber added hits.
Freshman pitcher
Anna Lang took the loss, giving up six runs (only two earned) in 3.1 innings. She struck out one. Berth finished and pitched 3.2 innings, giving up seven runs, only two earned.
MSUM led 3-0 after two innings, thanks to a Dummer sacrifice fly in the first and Roddie's two-run double in the second. The Huskies would score the next 13 runs over the next four innings to take a 13-3 lead in the sixth.
The Dragons mounted a rally in the sixth and scored three runs. Sundeen hit a two-run double while Roddie added an RBI single.
MSUM is scheduled to play at the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday but dates and sites may be changed depending the storm that is forecast for the region. Check back to msumdragons.com for site and date updates depending on the weather.
