MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team lost a pair of tough one-run games to Sioux Falls on Sunday in contests that came down to the final at-bat. USF won the first game 3-2 in eight innings and prevailed 4-3 in the second game.
MSUM is 11-22 overall and 5-11 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while USF improved to 18-19 overall and 8-8 in the league.
In the opener, junior third baseman
Emma Dummer had a huge game, going 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and two RBI. Sophomore first baseman
Ashley McCance had a double and run scored while freshman catcher
Jordie McNeilly and freshman outfielder
Jordey Smith had hits for MSUM.
Sophomore pitcher
Becky Berth took the loss for MSUM, giving up one earned run — the walkoff homer in the eighth — in 7.1 innings. She allowed three runs (one earned), striking out one while walking one.
MSUM gave up two unearned runs in the first but battled back to tie. Dummer hit a solo homer in the fourth to make it 2-1, and her RBI single in the sixth made it 2-2. USF's Emily Miller hit a walkoff homer in the eighth to clinch the win for the Cougars.
McNeilly was 3-for-3 with two RBI, a double and a run scored in Game 2 while sophomore center fielder
Elizabeth Johnson was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. McCance was 3-for-4 in Game 2 while Dummer added a double. Junior first baseman
Payton Gaber had a hit as well for MSUM.
The Dragons fell behind 2-0 but battled back to tie the game with two runs in the fourth, highlighted by McNeilly's RBI single. After a homer put USF up 3-2, McNeilly ripped an RBI double in the sixth to score Johnson to tie the game at 3-3.
USF scored the walkoff run on an error in the seventh.
Berth took the loss in relief despite not giving up an earned run in 1.2 innings. Freshman
Anna Lang gave up three runs in 4.1 innings.
MSUM will host Southwest Minnesota State at 2 p.m. on Monday. Because the games were originally scheduled to be played in Marshall, MSUM will be the visiting team in both games.
