Boom Leads Dragon Women Past Bemidji State, 63-56

BEMIDJI, Minn.—Sophomore forward Peyton Boom's 20 points helped lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team to a 63-56 win over Bemidji State in action Friday night.

The win for MSUM marks their 12th straight victory over the Beavers. The victory gives the Dragon women the Century trophy, which is awarded to the winner of the second meeting of the season between the two teams. MSUM has won the trophy since its inception.

MSUM improves to 12-4 overall this season and 7-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. BSU falls to 6-7 overall and 3-6 in the NSIC.

The Dragons shot 33 percent (19-of-57) from the field and 27 percent (4-of-15) from beyond the arc compared to 38 percent (18-of-48) from the field and 40 percent (6-of-15) from three. MSUM outrebounded BSU 51-28.

In addition to her career-high 20 points, Boom also led the Dragons on the glass with 11 rebounds to record her second career double-double. Junior guard Sarah Jacobson scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds for MSUM. Senior forward Megan Hintz had eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Beavers started the game strong, as they put the Dragons down 8-2 midway through the first quarter. The Dragons closed out the quarter with a second-chance layup by Boom with 12 seconds remaining to go down 15-13.

The Dragons kept the second quarter close but could not take the lead. Two BSU free throws with 3:17 remaining were the last points scored by either team for the remainder of the quarter, and the Dragons went into halftime down 28-26.

In the third quarter with 7:37 remaining, the Beavers saw their last lead of the game. A Boom layup tied the game, and a free throw by Jacobson gave the Dragons a 33-30 lead. MSUM ended the quarter up 48-41.

With 7:42 remaining in the fourth quarter, a Hintz free throw put the Dragons up 52-43, which marked their largest lead of the game. MSUM weathered a Bemidji rally that cut the lead to two and took home a seven-point victory, winning 63-56.

The Dragons travel to Crookston, Minn., tomorrow for their second meeting of the season with Minnesota Crookston at 3:30 p.m. MSUM won the first matchup with the Golden Eagles, winning 89-43 on Dec. 6.
