AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team picked up a pair of non conference wins on Tuesday, defeating Nyack College 2-0 and Edinboro 9-3. The games were held in Auburndale, Fla.
MSUM is now 3-7 on the season.
In the opener, sophomore pitcher
Anna Lang fired a five-hit shutout for her first collegiate complete game shutout. She struck out one and walked one.
Senior designated hitter
Madison Paige was 2-for-3 with a double while senior first baseman
Payton Gaber was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore left fielder
Jordey Smith was 1-for-3 with an RBI while sophomore second baseman
Samantha Gjerde, senior third baseman
Emma Dummer and sophomore catcher
Jordie McNeilly had hits.
Paige singled with one out in the fourth and was pinch ran for by Lang. McNeilly singled, and Gaber delivered with a double to score Lang, giving MSUM a 1-0 lead.
The Dragons added a valuable insurance run in the sixth thanks to an RBI single by Smith with two out.
Lang (2-2 on the year) allowed only one runner to reach third base.
"Our pitchers were successful in limiting runs and scattering hits today," MSUM head coach
Amanda Reckamp said. "Anna earned her first shutout and the defense played well behind her when they threatened."
In the win over Edinboro, the game was tied at 3-3 going into the top of the seventh before the Dragons broke through with six runs. Dummer was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI while sophomore second baseman
Samantha Gjerde was 3-for-4 with a homer and an RBI. Gaber was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Junior center fielder
Elizabeth Johnson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Junior
Ashley McCance was 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit three run homer. McNeilly added a hit and a run scored.
Junior
Becky Berth pitched well to pick up her first win. She struck out a season-high eight, walking none while allowing two earned runs in seven innings. She allowed six hits.
Edinboro led 2-0 after the top of the first; MSUM scored three times in the top of the third to take the lead. Gjerde led off with a homer. Johnson singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Two outs later, Gaber doubled to right to score Johnson, and she scored on Dummer's RBI single.
Edinboro tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth, and the game stayed that way till the top of the seventh when the Dragons broke the game open. With one out, Johnson singled and McNeilly walked. Paige reached on an error to load the bases. Johnson scored on a wild pitch, and McNeilly would score on Gaber's RBI single. Dummer followed with a double to score Paige to make it 6-3. McCance then stepped to the plate as a pinch hit and crushed a three-run homer to make it 9-3.
"Becky and another great defensive team effort kept the game close until our offense created a big gap in the seventh with big hits by Payton, Emma and a blast by Ashley to drive in runs," Reckamp said.
MSUM is off on Wednesday and will face Trevecca Nazarene at 12:45 p.m. Central on Thursday followed by a game against Salem at 4 p.m. Both games will be in Auburndale, Fla.
"Good pieces came together today and we will look to take that momentum into our last four games here," Reckamp said.
