The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team returns to action on the road this weekend as it opens Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division Play. The Dragons will play two games at Minnesota Crookston, with the first game being Friday at 5:30 p.m. and the second being Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
MSUM is 0-2 overall while UMC is 1-1.
THE SERIES
The Dragons and Golden Eagles have met 49 times previously with MSUM holding a commanding 36-13 lead. Minnesota Crookston swept both meetings in 2019-20, however.
ABOUT MSUM...
The Dragons opened the season with non-division games vs. No. 16 Augustana. Both games were close but the Vikings prevailed 74-69 and 89-79. Junior guard Lorenzo McGhee had a big weekend, averaging 17.0 points per game, including 20 points in Sunday's loss.
McGhee also averaged a team-best 6.0 rebounds per contest.
Freshman guard Jacob Beeninga averaged 12.0 points per game and shot 56.3 percent from the field. He had a career-high 18 points in Sunday's game.
Junior guard Gavin Baumgartner and senior guard Gatdoar Kueth each averaged 11.0 points per game on the weekend for the Dragons.
MSUM is shooting 47.1 percent from the field on the season while allowing a 50.5 field-goal percentage. The Dragons are averaging 74.0 points per game and allowing 81.5.
Chad Walthall is in his 11th season as the MSUM head coach with a record of 210-105.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION…
MINNESOTA CROOKSTON
The Golden Eagles, coached by former Dragon assistant Dan Weisse, split at home last weekend, losing to Concordia-St. Paul 80-56 on Saturday before beating the Golden Bears 84-80 in overtime on Sunday.
Brian Sitzmann leads UMC at 13.0 points per game while Georges Darwiche averages 12.5. Josh Dilling averages 11.5 points per game while Ibu Jassey Demba averages 10.5 points per contest. Jassey Demba leads at 8.0 rebounds per game.
UMC averages 70.0 points per game and allows 80.0.
Weisse is in his seventh season as the UMC head coach with a record of 56-112.
