Carlson Leads Dragon Volleyball to Sweep of Minnesota Crookston

CROOKSTON, Minn. – With help from a big night from junior outside hitter Amanda Carlson, the Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team rolled to a 25-19, 25-11, 25-23 win over Minnesota Crookston in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday night in Crookston, Minn.
 
MSUM improved to 2-8 in the NSIC while UMC fell to 0-10 in the league.
 
Carlson had 22 kills and hit .372 for the match. She accounted for 25.5 points on the night, which included two service aces, a block assist and a solo block.
 
Freshman middle blocker Abby Thompson had five kills, a team-best three solo blocks and a block assist.
 
Freshman setter Kelly Klees dished out 28 assists. Senior libero Sarah Petrbok had 16 digs and four service aces to lead the team in both categories. Freshman defensive specialist Jordan Hein added 12 digs while sophomore defensive specialist Brooke Walthall had eight digs and two service aces.
 
MSUM led in the first set 15-13 but junior middle blocker Elise Bakke had back-to-back block assists (teaming with Carlson on one and Klees on the other) to push the lead to 17-13.  The Dragons led the rest of the way as Walthall finished off the set with an ace.
 
The Dragons jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the second game and rolled to a 25-11 win.
 
The third game was close and UMC held a 23-22 lead. MSUM scored the final three points, however – one a service ace from Hein and two on kills from Carlson – to secure the 25-23 win and clinch the sweep.
 
MSUM is at Bemidji State on Saturday.
