MSUM Volleyball Wins 2nd Straight, Defeats Beavers in 4

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team picked up its second straight win on Saturday, topping Bemidji State 25-18, 18-25, 25-15, 25-10 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action in Bemidji, Minn.
 
MSUM improved to 3-8 in the NSIC while Bemidji State fell to 0-11 in the league.
 
Freshman setter Kelly Klees had a career-high 43 set assists for MSUM while junior outside hitter Amanda Carlson led MSUM with 19 kills. Junior outside hitter Bridget Witzmann had 11 kills while freshman middle blocker Abby Thompson had a career-high nine kills.
 
Carlson had four service aces while sophomore defensive specialist Brooke Walthall had two.
 
Senior libero Sarah Petrbok had 23 digs while Carlson had 17. Witzmann and junior Elise Bakke had two solo blocks each.
 
MSUM hit a season-best .313 while Bemidji State hit .173.
 
The Dragons scored four of the final five points of the first set to take a 25-18 win. Carlson had an ace during that run while Witzmann finished the set off with a kill.
 
Bemidji State jumped out to the lead in the second set and went on to take a 25-18 win.
 
In the third set MSUM led 8-6 but scored four in a row, including two kills from Witzmann, to push the lead to 12-6.  The Beavers never got closer than four on their way to a 25-15 win.
 
The Dragons took control early in the fourth set, jumping out to 9-2 lead. Bakke had two solo blocks during that run while Carlson had a service ace.
 
It was the first back-to-back wins of the season for MSUM.
 
The Dragons return home for next weekend and will host Minnesota Duluth at 6 p.m. on Friday.
