No. 3 West Texas A&M Downs Dragon Men, 87-65

CANYON, Texas – Continuing its difficult early-season schedule, the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team fell 87-65 to No. 3 West Texas A&M on Day 2 of the D2 Tipoff Classic in Canyon, Texas.

MSUM fell to 0-2 while West Texas A&M, which played in the national championship game last March, improved to 2-0.

Freshman guard Jacob Beeninga had a solid game for MSUM with 20 points. He connected on 5-of-8 from three-point range. He was the only Dragon to reach double figures.

Junior guards Lorenzo McGhee and Gavin Baumgartner each chipped in with nine points. Baumgartner led with seven rebounds while McGhee had four assists. Sophomore forward Dane Zimmer had three blocks.

MSUM couldn't overcome a first half which saw the Dragons shoot 20 percent (6-of-30), leaving them with a 48-18 halftime deficit.

The Dragons shot much better in the second half, hitting 15-of-33 (45.5 percent), and cut what was a 35-point lead to 19 but couldn't get closer.

West Texas A&M shot 50.8 percent for the game compared to 33.3 percent (21-of-63) for MSUM.

The Dragons wrap up the trip against No. 5 Colorado Mesa at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday in Canyon.
