CANYON, Texas – Four Minnesota State Univeristy Moorhead players scored in double figures as the Dragon men topped No. 5 Colorado Mesa, 81-71 in the final game of the D2 Tipoff Classic in Canyon, Texas.
Both teams are 1-2 on the season.
Junior guard
Bryce Irsfeld had a season-high 22 points while junior guard
Lorenzo McGhee had 19. Senior center
Jesse Bergh had 12 points off the bench while freshman guard
Jacob Beeninga had 10.
Sophomore forward
Dane Zimmer had six rebounds. Four Dragons had trwo assists: Beeninga, McGhee, junior guard
Gavin Baumgartner and senior forward
Siman Sem.
MSUM shot 46.7 percent from the field, hitting 28-of-60 attempts, while Colorado Mesa shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58).
The Dragons were a perfect 17-of-17 at the free-throw line, which proved to be big as Colorado Mesa was only 9-of-13 from the line.
MSUM opened the game on a 16-7 run, keyed by six points from Bergh. The Dragons led at halftime 38-32.
In the second half MSUM pushed the lead to double digits and led the rest of the way. Irsfeld's three-pointer with 8:33 left pushed the MSUM lead to 64-48. Colorado Mesa climbed within 75-69 on a three-pointer by Mac Riniker but got no closer as the Dragons went 6-for-6 from the line in the final minute.
MSUM is at the GAC/NSIC Challenge on Nov. 12-13 in Oklahoma.
