McGhee Hits Gamewinner, Dragon Men Rally for 79-78 Victory over SE Oklahoma State

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Junior guard Lorenzo McGhee hit the game-winning shot in the final seconds to lift the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team to a 79-78 comeback win over Southeastern Oklahoma State at the GAC/NSIC Challenge Friday in Shawnee, Texas.

McGhee led the Dragons (2-2) with 22 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of 2021-22.

MSUM was down by as many as 13 in the second half and trailed much of the way. In fact, MSUM led for only 48 seconds of the game – but led when it mattered at the final buzzer.

Freshman guard Jacob Beeninga had 16 points while junior guard Bryce Irsfeld had 15 and senior forward Gatdoar Kueth had 10. Junior guard Gavin Baumgartner had five assists while sophomore forward Dane Zimmer had seven rebounds.

MSUM shot just 30.6 percent in the first half but warmed up with a 19-of-36 (52.8 percent) effort in the second half, which saw the Dragons score 51 points. MSUM outscored SE Oklahoma State 51-41 in the second half.

The Dragons were down 78-75 with 14 seconds left when McGhee hit a shot to cut the lead to one. SE Oklahoma State missed two free throws, and after a Dragon timeout, McGhee hit the shot in the final seconds for the gamewinner.

MSUM was down 50-37 but chipped away at the deficit. Beeninga hit a pair of threes in the final two minutes which proved critical, including one that tied the contest at 73-73 with 57 seconds left.  MSUM was down by three with 21 seconds left but McGhee scored the final four points for the winning margin.

The Dragons will face Oklahoma Baptist at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
