Dragon Women Shut Down by UMD, 54-37

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team suffered a 54-37 loss to Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead.
 
MSUM, which was missing starting guard Natalie Jens (injury), fell to 4-7 overall and 3-4 in the NSIC with the loss while UMD improved to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the NSIC.
 
Junior forward Peyton Boom had 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting to pace MSUM. Sophomore guard Mariah McKeever added six. Senior guard Aliyah Miller had six rebounds in her first start as a Dragon while junior guard Natalie Steichen had five assists and three steals.
 
Minnesota Duluth shot 52.2 percent (24-of-46) compared to just 27.4 percent (17-of-62) for the Dragons. MSUM was 0-of-17 from three-point range.
 
The Dragons were down one after the opening quarter but scored the first four points of the second quarter to take a 17-14 lead. Boom and senior guard Nicole Herbranson scored to put MSUM ahead.
 
UMD would outscore the Dragons 14-6 over the final 8:42 of the half to take a 28-23 lead into halftime. Boom had 10 first-half points for MSUM on 5-of-5 shooting.
 
The Bulldogs outscored MSUM 16-7 in the third quarter to push the lead to 44-30 heading into the final frame. UMD would stretch the lead to 20 on its way to the win.
 
MSUM hit just 6-of-29 field goal attempts in the second half.
 
Junior forward Shyanne Loiland had five rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Dragons.
 
MSUM is off until Jan. 2 when it plays at Northern State.

The Dragons will finish with a record of 3-3 in the month of December for the first time since the 2001-02 outfit.
