VIRGINIA, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team picked up a 5-2 win over Bemidji State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday in Virginia, Minn. The match was the Head Coaching debut for MSUM's Jason Thiner.
MSUM is 1-0 on the year while Bemidji State is 1-1.
Bemidji State won two of three doubles matches to earn the team doubles point, but MSUM turned the momentum with five singles wins.
"We rebounded well after dropping the doubles point, winning five of the six singles matches," Thiner said. "Emma Andersen had a good day for the Dragons, teaming up with Madison Bell to win their doubles match, then winning her singles match 6-1,6-0 at the fith spot. Julia Geske battled back after dropping her first set to win at first singles in three sets."
Senior Julia Geske won at No. 1 singles for MSUM, rallying for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Bemidji's Sophie Groen. At No. 2, senior Lorissa Yuen won in straight sets over Shay Johnson, 6-2, 6-1.
The Griechen twins, Mikaela and Miranda, both won in straight sets in their Dragon debuts. Junior Mikaela Griechen won 6-3, 6-3 over Bemidji's Hannah Peterson at No. 4 singles while junior Miranda Griechen beat Laney Rutkowski, 6-4, 7-6.
Junior Emma Andersen won at No. 6 singles for MSUM, beating Maggie Richardson, 6-1, 6-0.
MSUM faces Minnesota Crookston on Sunday in Virginia.
