DULUTH, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 5-2 win over Minnesota Duluth on Saturday in Duluth, Minn. Dating back to the COVID-shortened 2020 season, the Dragons have won 14 matches in a row.
MSUM is 5-0 overall and in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. UMD fell to 1-4 overall and in the league.
The Dragons won the doubles point, taking victories at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Seniors Julia Geske and Lorissa Yuen topped Sophie Lynch and Natalie Cahill, 6-3 at No. 1 for MSUM while juniors Mikaela Griechen and Miranda Griechen rallied for a 7-5 win over Isabel Thiner and Mallory Lithun at No. 2 for the Dragons.
"Mikaela and Miranda came up with a huge comeback to secure the doubles point for us," MSUM head coach Jason Thiner said. "It was good to get the doubles point to give us confidence going into singles."
MSUM won four of six singles matches. Geske topped Lynch, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 to remain unbeaten on the year while senior Rachel Nguyen topped Lithun, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3.
Mikaela Griechen beat Emily Rahrik, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 for MSUM while Miranda Griechen topped Thiner, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.
MSUM will face St. Cloud State at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Duluth.
