MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team looks to build off a strong 2020 season under the direction of first-year Head Coach Jason Thiner. The Dragons begin their season this Saturday vs. Bemidji State in Virginia, Minn., and will also face Minnesota Crookston on Sunday.
Thiner was an assistant under Oliver Summers in 2020.
MSUM finished a perfect 9-0 overall and 8-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference during the COVID-19 shortened season one year ago. Coming into this season, MSUM was once again picked to finish second by the NSIC preseason poll. MSUM's current all-time record against Bemidji State is 10-3.
Senior Julia Geske returns to the team after having a phenomenal season last year: 8-0 in singles and 7-0 in doubles. She is a two-time All-NSIC First Team selection and Dragon Player to watch.
Senior Lorissa Yuen went 8-1 in singles and 6-0 in doubles last season.She was 7-1 in conference matches. Junior Rachel Nguyen went 6-2 in singles a year ago. She was 5-2 in Conference matches. Junior Jalyn Kornblum built an impressive season last year, going 5-1 in singles and 5-0 in doubles.
Junior Emma Anderson was 4-1 in singles and 2-0 in doubles last season.
Newcomers to the team including twin sisters Mikaela and Miranda Griechen who are transfers from Lewis and Clark Community College and freshman Madison Bell.
MSUM went 46-8 in singles and 25-2 in doubles as a team last season.
