Dummer Sets Doubles Record, MSUM Softball Splits with Golden Eagles

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Senior third baseman Emma Dummer set the new career doubles record as the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team split with Minnesota Crookston on Saturday in Moorhead, Minn. MSUM won the opener 1-0 and fell in the second game 5-1.

MSUM is now 5-19 overall and 3-7 in the NSIC while UMC is 6-18 overall and 2-8 in the league.

Dummer entered the game tied with Leah Davis with 33 career doubles, and she ripped an RBI double in the first inning of Game 2 to set the new career record.

"It was good to see Emma grab that record. She came back for some unfinished business after losing last season and continues to battle with us each game," MSUM head coach Amanda Reckamp said.

Freshman Reece Dahl fired her second complete game shutout of the year with a two-hitter in the opener for MSUM.

MSUM managed three hits in Game 1, including an RBI double by Smith and singles from Johnson and Sundeen.

The Dragons' run scored in the second. Dummer reached on an error by the right fielder and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Jordie McNeilly. Smith delivered with a double to right-center to put MSUM up 1-0.

Dahl made it stand for her second shutout of the year. She struck out two and walked four and allowed just two hits. Only one UMC runner reached third base in the game and that was in the first inning.  Some key defensive plays helped MSUM preserve its lead.

"We played well under pressure to get Game 1 and our outfield made several exceptional plays to limit some damage and get us out of a few threats," Reckamp said.

MSUM took the lead in Game 2 thanks to Dummer's RBI double. The Dragons scored one run and had four hits in the opening inning but were unable to score the rest of the game.

Dummer was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Smith was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Johnson, junior first baseman Samantha Gjerde, Sundeen and junior designated hitter Ally Helgoe added hits.

Junior Anna Lang took the loss, giving up four runs in four innings. She struck out two and walked two. Dahl pitched the fine three innings and allowed one unearned run.

MSUM hosts Bemidji State in a doubleheader at noon on Sunday to cap off the weekend.
