SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships with a 4-0 win over Sioux Falls Friday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
MSUM had lost to the Cougars 5-2 earlier this season; senior Lorissa Yuen did not play that weekend, however. This time, MSUM won three singles matches with the other three being unfinished (once a team gets to four points, match is over).
"We exorcised some demons today," MSUM head coach Jason Thiner said. "We knew they'd have confidence after beating us 5-2 in the regular season. We stepped up huge on the singles court and kept our momentum from the doubles going this time."
MSUM claimed the doubles point, thanks to wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Senior Julia Geske and junior Miranda Griechen beat Megan Quandt and Talia Janos, 6-4 while junior Emma Andersen and freshman Anna Bell beat Rachel Klatt and Peyton Forney, 6-3 at the third doubles slot.
Geske, who had lost to Quandt earlier this season, avenged the loss at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win on Friday. Senior Rachel Nguyen beat Lexi Miller, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 while Andersen rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Klatt at No. 6.
MSUM will face Winona State in the semifinals at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The Dragons beat Winona State 4-3 earlier this season.
