FAYETTE, Iowa — The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team dropped a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match to Upper Iowa on Saturday, losing by scores of 25-20, 25-8, 25-23 in Fayette, Iowa.
MSUM fell to 5-11 overall and 2-6 in the NSIC while Upper Iowa improved to 10-5 overall and 4-4 in the league.
Junior outside hitter Bridget Witzmann led MSUM with eight kills while junior middle blocker Tori Thompson had seven. Freshman setter Emily Skalicky had 20 assists and eight digs.
Freshman libero Macie Wieman had 19 digs for MSUM while Wittzmann had 11. Thompson had two solo blocks.
Upper Iowa hit .194 for the match compared to .050 for the Dragons.
In the first set MSUM was down 17-14 but an Upper Iowa error and a Thompson kill brought the Dragons within 17-16. The Peacocks scored the next five points to open up a 22-16 lead on their way to the 25-20 win.
Upper Iowa dominated the second set, but the Dragons rebounded with a better third set. The Dragons were down 8-7 but scored five of the next six points to take a 12-9 lead. Witzmann had two kills during that stretch while Thompson and sophomore outside hitter Jadyn Feist had one each.
The Dragons led 22-21 at one point but Upper Iowa rallied to earn a 25-23 win.
MSUM is at Northern State on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. match.
