Dragons Come Up Short Against Northern State

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- MSUM traveled to Northern State and came up short against a talented Wolves team, dropping the contest 35-7.

In a road test against the best statistical defense in the Northern Sun, the Dragons could not overcome a balanced Wolves attack this afternoon in Aberdeen.

Quarter By Quarter Breakdown

First Quarter

In the later stages of the opening frame, Northern State was able to strike first after a Stanley Haskins Jr. two-yard run and score. Both teams traded fumbles on their opening drive and the Wolves took advantage of the MSUM error. 

Second Quarter

Northern State capped off a 14 play, 71-yard drive with a Will Madler four-yard pass to Caleb Schnetzel to put the Wolves up 14-0. MSUM ran 12 plays in the second quarter. 

Third Quarter

A five-play, 37-yard drive for the Wolves culminated in a Isaiah Cherrier run inside the red zone to take a commanding 21-0 lead over the Dragons. 

Fourth Quarter

Will Madler connected with Ben Noland for an eight-yard score halfway through the quarter to give Northern State a 28-0 lead. The Dragons were able to get on the scoreboard with just over four minutes left as Jack Strand found Carter Birrenkott for a 64-yard score. However, Northern State was able to score once more on a 39-yard run from Wyatt Block.

Number Of The Night

MSUM wide receiver Gage Florence caught nine passes today. He now needs to make just two more receptions to break the MSUM school record for receptions in a season. 

MSUM is now 3-6 overall and in conference games. 

After two consecutive road games, the Dragons will return home next week to face Concordia-St. Paul. This will be the final home game of the 2022 season and it will also be Senior Day at SCHEELS Field.
