PREVIEW: Dragons Host Golden Bears In Final Home Game Of 2022

The Minnesota State University Moorhead football team plays its final home game of 2022 on Saturday against Concordia-St. Paul. It will also be Senior Day on Saturday.

Kickoff is at noon on SCHEELS Field in Moorhead, Minnesota.

An MSUM win over Concordia-St. Paul would...

- Give the Dragons their fourth win over CSP in the last five meetings.
- Give MSUM a home record of 2-3 on the season.
- Improve the Dragons record to 4-6.

Series History

MSUM and Concordia-St. Paul will meet for a 15th time with the Golden Bears leading the series 10-4. MSUM won the most recent meeting, 24-3 in St. Paul during the 2021 season.

Each week, Dragon play-by-play man Steve d'Eustachio gives us a nugget of insight into this week's Dragon football contest.

The last time the Dragons played an 0-9 team before Saturday was when they won 32-6 at Minnesota Crookston on Nov. 4, 2006. The Dragons moved to 5-5 with that win, then celebrated their first winning season since 1999 with a dramatic 22-20 win over Southwest Minn. St. in the Minneapolis Metrodome the following week to finish the season 6-5.


The Head Coaches
            
Steve Laqua is in his tenth season, and 11th year overall as MSUM's head coach with a record of 51-69 at the school. Shannon Currier is in his 10th season overall at CSP with a record of 48-58.

About MSUM
            
The Dragons fell to 3-6 on the season after falling short against Northern State University 35-7 in Aberdeen, S.D., last weekend. Freshman quarterback Jack Strand leads the passing attack for the Dragons and is 192-of-281 for 1,852 passing yards and 13 touchdowns.
            
Redshirt freshman Gage Florence has 89 receptions for 879 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Junior Ryan Bieberdorf has 35 receptions for 538 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Freshman Carter Birrenkott has 35 receptions for 416 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
            
Sophomore Luke Imdieke leads the rushing game for the Dragons with 190 rushing yards on 61 carries. Junior Hayden Boll adds 98 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 42 carries.
            
On defense, sophomore linebacker Josiah Behm leads the Dragons with 77 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Sophomore defensive back Marcus Gulley has 68 tackles, four sacks, and an interception. Junior defensive back Jared Kallenbach has 58 tackles and two interceptions. Junior defensive back Jake Bettcher adds 44 tackles and four interceptions. Sophomore Denver Sheets and redshirt freshman Abe Hestdalen add three sacks apiece.
           
The Dragons average 299.4 yards per game and allow 416.9 yards per game.

About Concordia St. Paul 
            
The Golden Bears fell to 0-9 on the season after falling to the University of Mary 23-13 last weekend. Sophomore quarterback Conner Cordts leads the passing attack for the Golden Bears and is 133-of-272 for 1,636 passing yards and eight touchdowns. 
            
Sophomore running back Jaylin Richardson has 23 receptions for 244 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Senior Joey Farley has 22 receptions for 213 receiving yards and one touchdown. Sophomore Drew Enke adds 21 receptions for 322 receiving yards and one touchdown. 
            
Jaylin Richardson leads the rushing attack for the Golden Bears with 613 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 105 carries. Conner Cordts adds 269 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 59 carries. 
            
On defense, junior linebacker Andrew Egnarski leads the defense with 76 tackles. Senior defensive back Rhett Sheehan has 54 tackles and two interceptions. Redshirt freshman Richard Wauer adds 45 tackles for the Golden Bears. Sophomores Brayden Hilgemann and Lucas Becker, and redshirt freshman Javon Jones lead the team in sacks with one apiece. 
            
The Golden Bears average 329.9 yards per game and allow 470.3 yards per game.

Young Receivers Emerge

Redshirt Freshmen receivers Gage Florence and Carter Birrenkott have combined for 124 receptions for 1,295 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns through nine games. Florence is two receptions shy of breaking the MSUM school record for receptions in a single-season.

The Dragons have 11 interceptions through nine games. Marcus Gulley, Adam Kallenbach, Cody Sorenson, Joey Hughes and Jackson Faller have one interception apiece. Jared Kallenbach adds two interceptions while Jake Bettcher leads the team with four interceptions on the season.

Week 10 Under Laqua

The Dragons are 7-3 in Week 10 games under Head Coach Steve Laqua, including a 31-26 win at Bemidji State in 2018 and a 22-16 win at Minot State in 2017. Bemidji State topped the Dragons 28-24 in 2019. In 2021, MSUM beat Concordia St. Paul 24-3.
