PREVIEW: MSUM Travels to Wayne State To Cap Off 2022 Regular Season

The Minnesota State University Moorhead football team wraps up the 2022 season against Wayne State this Saturday. 

Kickoff is at noon on Saturday in Wayne, Neb.

MSUM and Wayne State will meet for a 26th time with the Dragons leading the all-time series 15-10.

The Head Coaches
            
Steve Laqua is in his tenth season, and 11th year overall as MSUM's head coach with a record of 52-68 at the school. Logan Masters is in his first season as head coach at Wayne State with a record of 8-2. 

About MSUM
            
The Dragons improved to 4-5 on the season after defeating Concordia St. Paul 21-20 last weekend. Freshman quarterback Jack Strand leads the passing attack for the Dragons and is 215-of-322 for 2,144 passing yards and 16 touchdowns.
            
Redshirt freshman Gage Florence has 95 receptions for 940 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Junior Ryan Bieberdorf has 38 receptions for 573 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Freshman Carter Birrenkott has 38 receptions for 453 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
            
Sophomore Luke Imdieke leads the rushing game for the Dragons with 289 rushing yards on 76 carries. Junior Hayden Boll adds 144 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 59 carries.
           
 On defense, Sophomore linebacker Josiah Behm leads the Dragons with 81 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Sophomore Defensive Back Marcus Galley has 75 tackles, four sacks, and an interception. Junior Defensive Back Jared Kallenbach has 63 tackles and three interceptions. Senior Linebacker James Eggert adds 46 tackles and two sacks. Sophomore Defensive Back Marcus Galley leads the Dragons with four sacks. 
            
The Dragons average 308.9 yards per game and allow 415.2 yards per game.

About Wayne State 
            
The Wildcats are 8-2 on the season after defeating the University of Sioux Falls last weekend. Sophomore Quarterback Nick Bohn leads the passing attack for the Wildcats and is 136-of-225 for 2,030 passing yards and 18 touchdowns. 
            
Sophomore Jadon Johnson has 31 receptions for 583 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Senior Mason Lee has 29 receptions for 527 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore Ashton Schmaderer adds 20 receptions for 197 receiving yards. 
            
Quarterback Nick Bohn also leads the rushing attack for the Wildcats with 800 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns on 148 carries. Senior Anthony Watkins adds 737 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns on 128 carries. 
            
On defense, sophomore Linebacker Alex Kowalczyk leads the Wildcats with 85 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two interceptions. Sophomore Linebacker Dexter Larsen has 57 tackles, three sacks, and one interception. Senior Linebacker Jaylan Scott adds 52 tackles, four sacks, and one interception. Sophomore Defensive Lineman Jaxon Johnson leads the team in sacks with 4.5. 
            
The Wildcats average  422.9 yards per game and allow 316.5 yards per game. 

More About the Dragons

Not Seeing Yellow
            
After nine games, the Dragons have had 41 penalties for a total of 368 yards. That is an average of 36.80 yards per game.

Young Receivers Emerge
            
Redshirt Freshmen receivers Gage Florence and Carter Birrenkott have combined for 133 receptions for 1,393 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns through nine games.

The Dragons have 12 interceptions through nine games. Marcus Galley, Adam Kallenbach, Cody Sorenson, Joey Hughes, and Jackson Faller have one interception apiece. Jared Kallenbach adds three interceptions. Jake Bettcher leads the team with four interceptions on the season.

Season Finales Under Laqua

The Dragons are 5-5 in season finales under Head Coach Steve Laqua, beating St. Cloud State in 2019. In 2018, MSUM beat St. Cloud State 13-10. The Dragons lost to Bemidji State, 45-14 in 2017. Prior to that, MSUM recorded wins over Minnesota Crookston in 2014 and 2015 and Northern State (48-33 in 2016). In 2021, MSUM lost to Wayne State 24-21.
