PITTSBURG, Kan. – Minnesota State University Moorhead junior
Shyrone Kemp set a new school record and finished second in the triple jump at the NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday in Pittsburg, Kan.
MSUM sophomore
Travis Joseph was 10th in the high jump to earn All-American second team honors.
Kemp earned his third career All-American honor with a runner-up finish. On his second jump, he recorded a jump of 52-4 3/4 which shattered the school record of 51-9 he set earlier this indoor season.
"It was a great experience to compete against some of the top triple jumpers in the nation which also pushed me to perform my best," Kemp said. "Finishing second is never the goal, but everything works in God's timing. Even though I didn't reach my goal which was the 16-meter mark, I'm quite satisfied with my performance and everyone that helped me get this far which includes my coaches, the AT staff, my teammates and their support, my family & friends and God."
Kemp's runner-up finish was his best at nationals. He also won the long jump and triple jump at the NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Joseph cleared the heights of 6-6 3/4 and 6-8 3/4 on his first attempts; he cleared 6-9 3/4 on his third and final attempt after missing on his first two tries.
Joseph was unable to clear 6-11 on three attempts.
Junior
Ty Dawkins finished 16th in the 400 on Friday.
"Shy, Ty, and Travis represented Dragon Track & Field outstandingly this weekend," MSUM head coach
Ryan Milner said. "It was awesome to see Shy excel in a championship setting. And I look forward to seeing how this weekend's experience helps to shape future NCAA meets for Travis and Ty."
