ROLLA, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team dropped a pair of games to Missouri S&T on Wednesday, falling 6-2 and 3-1 in Rolla, Mo.
MSUM fell to 2-10 on the season while Missouri S&T improved to 12-10.
In the opener, freshman shortstop
Annika Norman was 1-for-3 with an RBI while freshman third baseman
Avery Steffen was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Senior first baseman
Jordey Smith, sophomore designated hitter
Evey Evans and freshman second baseman
Eliyah McCarthy had hits for MSUM. Steffen, McCarthy and junior left fielder
Kiley Washnieski stole bases.
Senior pitcher
Anna Lang was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs, only one earned, in 3.2 innings. Freshman
Emma Abbott gave up two runs in 1.1 innings while sophomore
Reece Dahl pitched a scoreless sixth.
MSUM led 1-0 after an RBI single from Norman in the third, but Missouri S&T scored the next four runs to build a 4-1 advantage.
Steffen's RBI single in the fifth scored sophomore catcher
Jessie Undem and cut the lead to 4-2 but MSUM got no closer.
In Game 2, Evans pitched well, giving up three runs, two earned, in six innings. She struck out none and walked one.
McCarthy was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored for MSUM while senior center fielder
Shay Weber was 2-for-3. Freshman third baseman
Ella Holiman had an RBI. Smith, Weber and McCarthy had stolen bases.
MSUM cut a 2-0 lead to one run in the fifth when McCarthy scored on a sacrifice fly from Holiman. Missouri S&T answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to push the4 lead to two runs.
MSUM wraps up the road trip on Thursday with a doubleheader at Illinois-Springfield.
