MARSHALL, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team was swept by Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday in Marshall, Minn., losing 3-1 and 7-1.
In the opener, senior center fielder
Jordey Smith was 1-for-3 with an RBI while junior left fielder
Kiley Washnieski was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Freshman catcher
Piper McKibbin, freshman pitcher
Avery Steffen and freshman second baseman
Hannah Losee added hits for the Dragons.
Steffen had a solid outing on the mound, giving up two earned runs in five innings. She struck out one. Senior
Anna Lang gave up one run in one inning.
MSUM was down 1-0 after the second but Smith's RBI single scored Washnieski in the third to tie the game at 3-3. The Mustangs scored single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to record the 3-1 win.
In Game 2, a pair of big innings – a three-run first and four-run third – provided the difference for SMSU.
Sophomore first baseman
Evey Evans was 2-for-3 with an RBI for MSUM while freshman right fielder
Eliyah McCarthy was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Steffen and freshman shortstop
Annika Norman had hits.
Sophomore pitcher
Reece Dahl took the loss, giving up seven earned runs in two innings. Freshman
Emma Abbott struck out one in two scoreless innings while Lang pitched two scoreless innings.
MSUM is scheduled to host UMary on Tuesday.
