WAYNE, Neb. – Senior center fielder
Jordey Smith's RBI double in the sixth scored the winning run and helped the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team to a 6-5 win over Wayne State in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Friday in Wayne, Neb. The Dragons settled for a split as the Wildcats won the opener 11-2 in five innings.
In Game 2, freshman second baseman
Hannah Losee was 4-for-4 with an RBI; the four hits were a career high. Freshman shortstop
Annika Norman was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI while sophomore pitcher
Evey Evans was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman first baseman
Piper McKibbin was 1-for-3 while senior center fielder
Jordey Smith was 1-for-4 with a double and RBI. Freshman designated hitter
Avery Steffen was 1-for-4 with an RBI while freshman third baseman
Ella Holiman was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
Steffen picked up her second win on the mound, pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Evans pitched five innings and got a no-decision, giving up five runs, four earned.
MSUM led 2-0 after the first after RBI singles from Evans and Norman. Wayne cut the lead to 2-1 but Steffen's fielder's choice scored Holiman in the bottom of the frame to push the lead back to two runs.
Wayne State scored three times in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead; Losee's RBI single in the bottom of the frame tied the game at 4-4.
The Wildcats scored another run in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead, but Norman's RBI double tied the game at 5-5. In the sixth, with two out, Smith delivered a big RBI double to break the 5-5 tie and score Holiman with the winning run.
In the opener, Evans was 2-for-2 while McKibbin was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Steffen was 1-for-2 with a run scored while McCarthy had an RBI.
Senior
Anna Lang took the loss for MSUM, giving up four runs, one earned, in two innings. Sophomore
Reece Dahl gave up three earned runs in 1.1 innings while freshman
Emma Abbott gave up four earned runs in 1.2 innings. Lang struck out two while Dahl struck out one.
MSUM plays at No. 13 Augustana for a noon doubleheader on Saturday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
