FARGO, N.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team picked up a 5-2 win over Minnesota Crookston in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
MSUM improved to 5-11 overall and 1-9 in the NSIC while UMC fell to 2-11 overall and 0-10 in the NSIC.
"We played our best all-around doubles of the season to win all three to pave the way to our first conference win," MSUM head coach
Jason Thiner said. "Then we carried that momentum into singles. It was fun to perform so well in front of a lot of families and fans who are in town for senior weekend."
MSUM won all three doubles matches to pick up the team point. Seniors
Mikaela Griechen and
Miranda Griechen topped UMC's Maddi Schneider and Sarah Velasquez 6-2 at No. 1 doubles while senior
Emma Andersen and sophomore
Madison Bell beat Michelle Swyter and Samantha Gutierrez, 6-1. Freshmen
Tia Dykema and
Greta Reichmann earned a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles for the Dragons.
MSUM won four of the six singles matches.
Mikaela Griechen beat Swyter, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles while
Miranda Griechen beat Velasquez, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Dykema rolled past Tasha Achermann 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 for the Dragons while Bell beat Gutierrez, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
The Dragons will look to wrap up the season on a winning note against Bemidji State at 9 a.m. on Sunday. The Griechen twins and Andersen will be honored as part of Senior Day.
