BILLINGS, Mont. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team outlasted South Dakota Mines, 25-21, 25-14, 21-25, 18-25, 15-10 at the Yellowjacket Invitational in Billings, Mont., on Friday. The win gave MSUM a split on the day as the Dragons lost to Montana State Billings in five sets.
The Dragons are 1-1 in non conference play.
In the win over South Dakota Mines, sophomore outside hitter Jadyn Feist had 15 kills and seven digs, while junior middle blocker Tori Thompson and junior right side hitter Bridget Witzmann had 12 kills each. Freshman setter Emily Skalicky had 23 assists while sophomore setter Halle Erickson added 17. Junior libero Brooke Walthall had 18 digs while Witzmann had 10. Thompson had four block assists at the net.
Feist and Skalicky had three service aces each.
MSUM won the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-14 but the Hardrockers won the next two to force a fifth set. MSUM held a 9-8 lead in the final set but outscored SD Mines 6-2 the rest of the way.
Against MSU Billings, MSUM had a two-set lead before the Yellowjackets came back to win the final three sets in a 16-25, 16-25, 25-
Skalicky had 23 assists while Erickson had 18. Walthall had a career-high 30 digs while Jadyn Fest had 20, one short of a career-high.
Witzmann had 18 kills, just to away from a career-high, while Feist had 12 and Thompson had nine.
Senior middle blocker Elise Bakke had two solo blocks and two assists.
MSUM hit .209 for the match while MSUB hit .158.
MSUM cruised to a pair of 25-16 wins in the two opening sets and held a 21-20 lead in the third set after a MSUB error. But the Yellowjackets scored the next three points — all on Dragon errors — to take 23-21 lead.
Feist's kill gave MSUM a 25-24 lead, but MSUB would score the final three points on two kills and a service ace to record the win. MSUB won the fourth set to force a fifth set.
MSUM will play two more matches on Saturday. The Dragons will face Chadron State at 9 a.m. Central and will face St. Martin's at 1 p.m. Central.
