BILLINGS, Mont. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team split during the final day of competition at the Yellowjacket Classic in Billings, Mont. MSUM swept Chadron State, 25-23, 25-13, 25-17 before losing to St. Martin's 19-25, 26-24, 25-15, 22-25, 15-10.
MSUM concluded the weekend with a 2-2 mark. Three of the Dragons' four matches went to five sets.
In the opening win over Chadron State, junior outside hitter Bridget Witzmann had 14 kills while junior middle blocker Tori Thompson had 10 and Jadyn Feist seven.
Freshman setter Emily Skalicky had 25 set assists, two service aces and 11 digs while sophomore Halle Erickson had nine assists.
Junior libero Brooke Walthall had 25 digs while freshman defensive specialist Mace Wieman had 12. Thompson led the defense at the net with four block assists and one solo.
MSUM was down 20-18 in the opening set but scored five points in a row to take a 23-20 lead. Witzmann had two kills while Thompson had one. Senior middle blocker Elise Bakke had a solo block.
Chadron State got within 23-22 but MSUM scored two of the last three points as Feist and Thompson teamed up for the block to seal the win.
From there, MSUM dominated with 25-13 and 25-17 wins.
In the five-set loss to St. Martin's, Witzmann had 18 kills while Thompson had 10. Junior right side hitter Teeya Doppler aded seven. Skalicky had 25 set assists while Erickson had 18.
Walthall led with 19 digs while Witzmann had 14 and Feist 10. Thompson had three block assists and one solo block.
The Dragons will play at the Augustana Tournament on Sept. 2-3 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. The Dragons will open on Sept. 2 against Northern State for a non conference match.
