MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team rolled past Bemidji State, 25-22, 25-13, 25-15 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.
The Dragons are now 5-5 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC while the Beavers fell to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Junior right-side hitter Teeya Doppler and sophomore outside hitter Jadyn Feist paced the Dragons with 11 kills each while junior outside hitter Bridget Witzmann had nine.
Freshman setter Emily Skalicky dished out 28 assists and added 10 digs. Freshman libero Macie Wieman had 17 digs while Feist added 13. Freshman middle blocker Jocelin Feutz had five block assists.
MSUM hit .241 for the match, compared to .079 for the Beavers.
In the first set Bemidji State opened a 19-17 lead before the Dragons scored six points in a row — which included three block assists from Feutz and two from Witzmann, to take a 23-19 lead.
The Beavers got as close as 24-22 but a Witzmann kill finished off a 25-22 Dragon win.
The Dragons fell behind in the second set and were down 7-6 at one point, but scored seven of the next eight points to surge into a 13-8 lead. Feist and senior middle blocker Elise Bakke had two kills each during that run. From there the Dragons controlled the set on their way to a 25-13 win.
MSUM opened a 4-1 lead in the third set thanks to kills from Witzmann, Feist and Feutz and a service ace from junior defensive specialist Brooke Walthall. The score was tied at 4-4 but the Dragon scored six points in a row — keyed by a kill from Bakke and a block from Witzmann — to open a 10-4 lead. The Dragons never looked back in a 25-15 win.
Witzmann finished with one solo block and three assists for the Dragons.
MSUM is on the road next week, staring Sept. 16 at Minnesota Duluth.
