WINONA, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team was swept by Winona State, 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday night in Winona, Minn.
MSUM fell to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in the NSIC with the loss while Winona State improved to 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the league.
Junior outside hitter Bridget Witzmann had nine kills to lead MSUM while junior right side hitter Teeya Doppler and junior middle blocker Tori Thompson had seven each. Freshman setter Emily Skalicky had 27 assists.
Freshman libero Macie Wieman had 19 digs while Witzmann had 11 and sophomore outside hitter Jadyn Feist had 10. Senior Elise Bakke had three block assists and a solo block.
MSUM hit .129 for the match while Winona State hit .267.
MSUM was down 5-0 in the first set but battled back to tie at 6-6 thanks to two kills from Witzmann and one each from Doppler and Bakke. The Dragons were within 19-17 but got no closer and fell 25-19.
A kill by Thompson brought MSUM within 7-5 in the second set but Winona State scored five in a row to push the lead to 12-5, on its way to a 25-19 win. Winona State carried that momentum into a 25-16 win in the third set.
MSUM will play at Upper Iowa for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday.
