Dragons Make it 10 Straight in Win Over Vikings

MOORHEAD, Minn. – MSU Moorhead won their 10th consecutive game on Saturday evening with a 76-57 win over Augustana. It is the third consecutive game where the Dragons have held their opponent under 60 points.

The Dragons began the game slowly thanks to some tough, physical defense from Augustana. MSUM started just three of eight from the field and fell behind by three points to the Vikings. At the under 15 media timeout, a visibly frustrated Tim Bergstraser exclaimed a simple, yet effective message to his team.

"Man up!" the Dragon head coach said.

With his players in agreement, the Dragons would secure a 23-20 lead late in the first half thanks to six early points from Lorenzo McGhee. MSUM would finish the half outscoring Augustana 8-2 and would carry a 31-22 lead into the locker room. McGhee's six points were crucial, but Jaden Stanley-Williams scored five of MSUM's final eight points of the half to finish the first 20 minutes with seven points, a game high.

While the Vikings made a small push to open the second half, cutting the Dragon lead to five points, MSUM would not trail for the remainder of the game. Jacob Beeninga, who scored five points in the first half, poured in 18 in the second half to score a game-high 23 points, including four three-pointers. Stanley-Williams nailed a massive three as Augustana was trying to come back that took all the wind out of the Viking sails.

Lorenzo McGhee put the final exclamation point on the game with a fastbreak dunk that shook Nemzek Fieldhouse to its core. McGhee finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. The Dragons shot 45.6 percent from the field in the 76-57 win to capture their 10th consecutive victory. MSUM also held a 41-32 rebound advantage over the Vikings in the win.

In the end, the Dragons did indeed man up to secure their eighth conference win and stay atop the NSIC standings.
