MOORHEAD, Minn. -- A goal from
Grace Heying equalized MSU Moorhead soccer with Minnesota Duluth, but the Bulldogs utilized a rebound goal to take a 2-1 lead to defeat the Dragons in NSIC play on Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs would jump in front in the match in the 34th minute on a strike from Morgan Eckerle. The goal was one of ten Minnesota Duluth shots in the frame as MSUM would fire off six shots in the first 45 minutes. The Dragons would get a few early opportunities with
Blayke Hurley and
Brooklyn Broderick getting some solid chances at the net. However, both shots were stopped by Bulldogs keeper Abigail Gotham. Through the first half, Minnesota Duluth led 1-0.
It would not take long for the Dragons to equalize as Broderick and
Lilly Johnson would each put a shot on goal in quick succession. With the ball bouncing around the Bulldog box in the 52nd minute, it eventually found its way to
Grace Heying, who scored her second career goal to equalize the Dragons and Bulldogs.
Simone Lewald would keep the momentum with the Dragons as she would save a Bulldog penalty kick chance in the 63rd minute.
That advantage would not last too much longer as Minnesota Duluth had a shot on goal shortly thereafter that was again saved by Lewald. However, the rebound found its way to Minnesora Duluth's Victoria Thorson, who put a shot in as Lewald was on the ground from the prior shot. MSUM would only get one more chance with a shot on goal from
Ava Kieser in the 85th minute, which was saved by Gotham. The Dragons finished the contest with 12 total shots, nine being on net.
