ABERDEEN, S.D. – A season ago, MSU Moorhead softball registered eight wins on the season. Today, the Dragons notched their eighth win in as many games with a pair of victories over Doane and Jamestown.
It is the best eight-game start for MSUM since 2015 where they began the year 5-3. The Dragons bested Doane 9-4 before beating the Jimmies 11-8 to extend their win streak to eight games.
Dragons 9, Tigers 4
It would be Doane who would get on the board first in the bottom of the first inning due to a MSUM error. The Dragons would answer right back in the top of the second as
Lexie Wilson drove in
Jordey Brown-Smith on a fielder's choice. Doane would respond with another run in the bottom half of the third inning on an RBI groundout, taking a 2-1 lead. That lead would hold until the Dragon bats woke up in the top half of the sixth inning.
Azalya Lopez scored
Grace Oeltjen on a Tiger error, knotting the score at 2-2.
MSUM would bring around four more runs in the frame thanks to a two-run double from
Annika Norman.
Avery Steffen would continue her solid weekend with a two-run home run that scored herself and Norman, giving the Dragons a 6-2 lead. Steffen would put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh inning with her second home run of the game and third of the weekend. The three-run tater brought in Lopez and Brown-Smith. The sophomore finished the game going three for three from the plate with five RBIs.
Reece Dahl would start in the circle for the Dragons, pitching two strong innings, striking out three of the seven Tigers she faced.
Evey Evans would finish the contest for MSUM, pitching the remaining five innings and striking out three more batters.
Dragons 11, Jimmies 8
Lizzy Davis opened the game with an RBI single in the first inning, scoring
Evey Evans. Davis would drive in another run in the second inning as part of a five-run Dragon inning.
Reece Dahl,
Mack Gallagher and
Teagan Pranchke all had RBIs in the frame for MSUM. Although Jamestown would answer with three runs of their own in the top of the third, MSUM would answer the call offensively again. The Dragons would score four more runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a grand slam from Gallagher.
Evey Evans would drive in a run in the fifth inning to bring the score to 11-4 in favor of the Dragons.
While Jamestown would score four runs in the top of the seventh, it was not enough to overtake the Dragons.
Reece Dahl pitched two and one-third innings for MSUM, surrendering just two hits and one earned run while striking out one.
Eliya Johnson would pitch the remaining four and two-thirds innings, fanning four Jimmies.
