VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. –
Ashley Hokanson finished national runner-up in the pole vault while
Braxton Bruer qualified for the 800m final at the first day of the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
All four Dragons that competed today secured All-American honors with
Ashley Hokanson and
Braxton Bruer solidifying First Team distinction.
Robynn Rolle-Curry and
Jared Gregoire earned Second Team honors.
Vaults
Ashley Hokanson took home national runner-up honors in the pole vault, clearing as high as 13'-07.25" (4.15m). While both Hokanson and Colorado Mines' Hannah Miller each failed on three attempts at 13'-09.25" (the MSUM school record), Miller won the event by being unblemished through each of the previous five heights. Hokanson had two scratches over the five flights.
"You can learn a lot about an athlete from how they compete in a championship setting," said MSUM head coach
Ryan Milner. "Ashley was challenged in our last two championships and found a way to rise to the occasion in a career defining way."
The performance does garner Hokanson First Team All-American honors. It is the first such honor of her career.
Sprints
Robynn Rolle-Curry ran a new school record time of 55.13 in the 400m run to place ninth in the preliminary heats. While Rolle-Curry did not qualify for the finals (missing the cut by .05 seconds) on Saturday, she did earn Second Team All-American honors for the ninth-place finish. It is the fourth time this season where Rolle-Curry has set a new MSUM record in the event.
Middle Distance
Braxton Bruer finished third in his heat in the 800m to automatically qualify for Saturday's 800m final. Bruer ran a 1:52.17 in the preliminary to finish fourth among all competitors. The performance locks in First Team All-American honors for Bruer, the first of his career.
Jared Gregoire paced a 1:53 flat in the same event, but would miss the final by .19 seconds. Gregoire finished ninth in the preliminaries to take home Second Team All-American honors.
