MSUM Falters in Non-Conference Loss to St. Cloud State

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – MSU Moorhead soccer would equalize St. Cloud State in the second half, but the Huskies got the better of the Dragons in the end. A 78th minute goal secured a 2-1 win for St. Cloud State in non-conference action.

The Huskies would begin the first half on the attack, marking off five shots in the first 25 minutes of play. Dragon goalkeeper Simone Lewald had a tremendous first period, facing a total of 13 St. Cloud State shots. Seven of those shots would be on net as Lewald was able to stop all seven.

The Dragon offense would not begin to stir until late in the first 45 minutes. Blayke Hurley was able to fire off a shot from the top of the box in the 42nd minute that missed high. The sophomore's strike was the only MSUM shot in the half. MSUM's defensive effort was enough to keep the game scoreless heading into the second half.

That would be short-lived as the second half commenced, however. St. Cloud State was immediately able to push the ball towards the Dragon net. The Huskies found net off the foot of Linsey Trapino in the 46th minute to break the scoreless tie.

The Dragon offense began to push forward in the 58th minute as a wonderful through ball found a sprinting Jensen Seidel. The sophomore was tied up with her defender, but was able to muster enough strength to get a shot off. The kick was able to roll past the approaching Husky goalkeeper as Seidel remained tied up with her marker. Seidel fell to the turf as the ball found net to even the score.

It took until the 78th minute before either team got a shot off. The Huskies would go in front 2-1 thanks to a goal from Jenna Dominguez. That proved to be the difference maker as MSUM did not get a shot off for the remainder of the contest. St. Cloud State finished with 14 shots on goal as Simone Lewald made 12 saves for the Dragons.
