ST. PETER, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead Dragon tennis began their season at the two-day Gustavus Adolphus Fall Invite on Saturday and Sunday. Players were separated into brackets in both singles and doubles play.
Competing at the tournament alongside the Dragons were host Gustavus Adolphus, Minnesota State, Sioux Falls and the University of Mary.Â
Saturday kicked off with several Dragon victories to get their season off and running. Senior
Shaelyn Johnson won her first singles match of the season, defeating Minnesota State's Chiara Cornelutti in a battle 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
Claire Nemmers would also pick up a victory in singles play to open Saturday with a 6-3, 6-1 win over USF's Brianna Holm. Nemmers would finish the tournament with another singles win, this time over USF's Mary Enright (6-1, 6-2) The pair would team up in doubles for a pair of wins on the tournament following an opening round loss. Johnson and Nemmers defeated Minnesota State's Katelyn Daravingas and Georgia Deml 8-7 (7-4) before closing the tournament with another win over Brynn Psooy and Taina Cordeiro of MSU, 8-4.
Madison Bell would drop her opening round singles contest only to round out the tournament with a pair of default victories. Bell would pair with 2022-23 partner
Tiannah Gu in doubles. The pair would pick up their first doubles win of the season with an 8-3 victory over USF's Talia Janos and Chloe Siegfort. Gu would battle in singles play, taking two of her three matches to a third set highlighted by a Sunday marathon with USF's Chloe Siegfort (2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 11-9).Â
Lakia Manska would team up with true freshman
Katryna Hansen in doubles play with the duo finding a quick chemistry. The pair battled in a narrow Saturday defeat against USF's Brianna Holm and Annika Randt (8-7 (8-6)). Manska would have a whirlwind of a singles match that same day with USF's Rhianna Cantine as she would fall 7-6 (10-4), 5-7, 10-3. Hansen would pick up her first collegiate singles victory on Sunday with a 7-5, 6-2 straight sets win over Minnesota State's Taylor Julsrud.
Kiera Radniecki would come close to her first collegiate victory on Sunday against USF's Karly Doom with Radniecki falling 6-2, 3-6, 10-3. Radniecki would compete in a round robin exhibition bracket in doubles as well.Â
