Dragons Own Second Half for Season-Opening Win over Mountaineers

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead soccer showed an elevated level of aggressiveness in the final 45 minutes to take home a 2-0 victory over Western Colorado to begin the 2023 season.

In the win, it is MSUM's first season-opening victory since September 5, 2014, a 1-0 win over Washburn.

The Dragons would have an early opportunity in the first half following a Mountaineer foul inside the penalty box on MSUM striker Jensen Seidel. Moorhead native Madeline Etter would take the free kick, angling the shot to the right as the ball careened off the post. The narrow miss was only a sign of things to come for MSUM as they would have six shots through 45 minutes. On the other end, MSUM's defense stood tall against nine Mountaineer shots in the first half. The two teams would enter the half break tied 0-0.

To start the second half, the Dragons would come out with a renewed sense of energy and aggression, particulary on the offensive side of the ball. MSUM would keep the ball on the Western Colorado end of the field for much of the opening minutes of the half. Jensen Seidel would put two shots on goal in the 46th minute with both narrowly being saved by Mountaineer goalkeeper Mei Hayashizaki. The Dragons would not stay scoreless for long as Tabea Czech launched a beautiful freekick set piece from the right corner which found the head of Allison Tharp with the ball finding the back of the net. Through 61 minutes, MSUM held a 1-0 advantage heading into the home stretch of the contest.

The Dragons would put the finishing touches on the match in the 84th minute as Jessica Carlson would boot a kick across the length of the pitch. The ball would land just in front of MSUM forward Blayke Hurley. The sophomore would sprint forward, beating the Mountaineer defender tailing her as Hurley snapped off a kick that found all net. With time waning, MSUM would take a commanding 2-0 lead with that score holding true through full time.

In the win, Dragon goalkeeper Simone Lewald was rock solid between the pipes, stopping 10 Western Colorado shots and working towards a clean sheet for the match.
