Dragons, Warriors Finish Gridlocked in Physical Match

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- A soggy pitch served as the venue on Sunday afternoon as MSU Moorhead and Winona State fought for a full 90 minutes on Nemzek Soccer Field. The rain would not deter any offense as the Dragons and Warriors finished the contest in a 2-2 tie.

The Warriors would almost immediately gain momentum in the early stages of the match, scoring a goal in the fourth minute. A Winona State shot bounced off the top crossbar and found its way to the foot of Johanna Shubert, who put the deflected ball away for a goal. The Warriors would continue with their aggressive offense as they would earn a penalty kick opportunity in the 12th minute. Reanne Weil took the kick, which was saved by Simone Lewald to keep the score at 1-0. That massive save from the senior proved to be the tide-turner as the Dragons would jumpstart their offense with a shot from Jensen Seidel shortly thereafter.

MSUM would equalize the contest three minutes later as Ava Kieser worked a cross into the Warrior box. The ball floated around a bit before finding the leg of senior Madeline Etter, who put a shot into the back of the net. For Etter, the score was her first career goal as a Dragon. MSUM would continue with their offensive attack through the remainder of the first period as Mason Kimble would get a header opportunity in the 33rd minute which was saved by Winona State keeper Alyson Jumper. The ball became loose after the save with Ally Peters connecting on the rebounded header for her first goal of the season. MSUM would head into the halftime break with a 2-1 lead with MSUM putting five shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.

It would take Winona State less than seven minutes to tie the score in the second half as they would earn yet another penalty kick opportunity. This time, Abigail Williams would put a shot past Lewald to even the score at two. From there, MSUM and Winona State would scratch and claw in a physical battle for the game-winning score. In the half, Winona State would put three shots on goal with just the penalty chance making it past Lewald. The Dragons would get six shots off with none finding goal.

In the final minute of the contest, Izabela Flores would receive a beautiful long pass and would see nothing but green and Jumper in front of her. The true freshman worked her way into the box and was ready to get the game-winning shot off before Jumper slid in and took the ball away. Neither team would be able to get another chance on goal as time expired shortly thereafter.
