Dragons Bested By Warriors in Straight Sets

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead fell in straight sets at home to Winona State on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons were within six points in each set, but could not get over the Warrior advantages. 

Winona State would jump in front with an early 9-6 lead before a kill from Bridget Witzmann helped bring the score to 9-8 in favor of the Warriors. The visitors would rally for four consecutive points to push that lead to 13-8 midway through the frame. MSUM would be able to keep the match within three points with kills from Raiah Mandell and a handful of Warrior errors. Nearing the end of the set, Winona State would hold a 21-16 lead before MSUM would once again bring the count to within three points headlined by a service ace from Emily Ramsay. Winona State would come to set point before MSUM answered with a kill from Witzmann to bring the score to 24-22. The Warriors would take the first frame following a Dragon service ace. 

Winona State would open up the second set on a 5-1 run before MSUM would rally back to tie the score at seven with kills from Jadyn Feist, Maci Martini and Witzmann. The Warriors would go on a 4-0 run to build an 11-7 advantage. The two teams would go back and forth midway through the set with the Warriors still holding a two-point lead (16-14). MSUM would come as close as three points, but were unable to ever equalize Winona State. The Warriors would win the second set 25-20. 

In the final set of the afternoon, it would be the Dragons who would assert themselves offensively. MSUM would lead 10-8 early in the frame thanks to kills from Abby Thompson and a pair of service aces from Emily Skalicky. Leading 11-10, the Dragons would fall victim to a 7-1 Warrior run as Winona State would pull in front 16-12. MSUM would be unable to ever gain another lead in the set as Winona State polished off the match with a 25-19 third set victory.

MSUM (4-10, 1-5 NSIC) is right back on the road for a Tuesday date with Minot State inside the MSU Dome. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. from Minot, N.D.
