MOORHEAD, Minn. – MSU Moorhead women's basketball pulled down a whopping 67 rebounds, led by
Terryn Johnson's 20, in a balanced effort as the Dragons handled Minnesota Crookston, 75-52, on Tuesday evening.
The Dragons would open up the first period by outscoring Minnesota Crookston 28-18 as freshman
Karlee Fisher would dominate for the home team off the bench. Fisher scored 10 points in the first period, including a pair of three-point makes. One of those three-point makes came as the shot clock was winding down as
Terryn Johnson found Fisher for the make. Johnson added in four points and four rebounds in the frame for the Dragons while
Natalie Jens added five points.
Tori Ratz drained a three-pointer as the quarter waned to keep the momentum with the Dragons.
MSUM would only continue their onslaught in the second period thanks to their dominance on the glass. The Dragons would outrebound the Golden Eagles 29-11 in the first half alone and would force the visitors to a 37.5 percent field goal clip in the second period. This allowed MSUM to take a commanding 43-28 lead late in the half as Fisher led the way with 13 points.
Abby Berge was all over the floor as well in the second period, scoring seven points for MSUM including a four of six clip from the field. MSUM led 52-32 at the break.
Neither team would shoot the ball well in the third period with the Dragons narrowly outscoring the Golden Eagles, 11-10. However, MSUM would remain in firm control thanks to their prowess in boxing out and grabbing rebounds. The Dragons would hold a 49-28 rebound advantage by the end of the third quarter as Johnson would hold a line of eight points and 16 rebounds through 30 minutes. Berge had solidified a double-double by the third quarter of 13 points and 11 rebounds with Fisher pacing the scoring with a new career-high of 17 points. MSUM led 63-42 after 30 minutes of play as the Golden Eagles shot just 15 percent from the floor in the frame.
That lead was just too much to overcome a poor shooting night from Minnesota Crookston as the visitors shot a harsh 23.5 percent from the field in the final 10 minutes. The Dragons held on to win 75-52 behind 42 bench points led by a combined 32 points from Fisher and Berge. MSUM concluded the game with 67 team rebounds, which was still 11 shy of the single-game school record of 78 set on January 21, 1978 against Martin Luther. The Dragons held a plus-27 advantage on the glass for the contest.
