Dragons Say Aloha to ‘Hoops in Hawaii’ Tilts

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead women's basketball embarks on its longest trip of the season as the Dragons head to Honolulu, Hawaii for a pair of matchups in the Hoops In Hawaii Classic. MSUM takes on Hawaii Pacific on Tuesday at 9 p.m. before battling UC Colorado Springs on Friday at 5:15 p.m.

Live stats and video will be available at msumdragons.com.

Matchup History...The two matchups over Thanksgiving week will be the first meetings all-time for all three programs. MSUM has not met up with a PacWest opponent since their matchup with Hawaii-Hilo on November 27, 2019. The Dragons won that contest, 61-45. MSUM has not played an RMAC school in non-conference since November 15, 2019. The Dragons topped MSU Denver, 72-46 at home. In the program's history, MSUM has played a total of seven games off the mainland in Hawaii. The Dragons are 4-3 all-time in those contests with the first coming on December 19, 2006 when MSUM defeated Glenville State, 72-71 in overtime. The last time MSUM won in The Aloha State was the aforementioned win over the Vulcans in 2019.

Last Time Out...The Dragons dropped a home non-conference game to Missouri Western last Thursday. MSUM fell victim to 20 turnovers, including nine in the final period in a 68-57 loss. The Dragons struggled from the free throw line with 12 misses in 28 attempts from the charity stripe.

Too Tall Terry...Junior post Terryn Johnson has been MSUM's most vital weapon on both ends of the floor through four games. Johnson scored 15 points and snared 10 rebounds against Missouri Western on Thursday, her first double-double of the year. In her career, Johnson has 10 double-double performances. The junior was also impactful on defense, blocking a shot and finishing the game with three steals.

Berge Shows Her Range...Sophomore guard/forward Abby Berge turned in her first double-double of the young season on Thursday against Missouri Western. Berge scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Berge showcased her range in the game, sinking two of four three-point attempts. The sophomore made five of her seven shot attempts in the game overall. Berge has already attempted eight long range shots in four games after shooting only 30 all year as a true freshman.

A Little Grit N' Grind...In MSUM's contest against Missouri Western, the Dragons were lifted off the bench by sophomore Ashley Fritz and freshman Caylin Kelly. Fritz netted six points, but also grabbed eight rebounds, including four offensive rebounds. Kelly scored five huge points in the first half, including her first career made three-pointer. The pair combined for 10 rebounds and a steal.

Control The Glass...The Dragons once again outrebounded their opponent against Missouri Western on Thursday. MSUM held a plus-10 advantage on the glass against the Griffons and a plus-2.8 mark for the season. The Dragons average 40.5 rebounds a game, which is the fourth-best tally in the NSIC so far this season. MSUM is also second in the NSIC with 13.5 offensive boards per contest.

Scouting Report...Hawaii Pacific will look to get graduate forward Ella Berge involved offensively. Berge averages 18 points per game for the Sharks to go along with seven rebounds a game. The Mountain Lions rely heavily on a pair of dynamite scorers in senior forward Maison White and sophomore guard Amyah Moore Allen. Both players were All-RMAC First Team performers a season ago and have combined to score 28.3 points and 13 rebounds a game this year.  White is wildly efficient, connecting on 69 percent of her shot attempts so far this season.

Karla Nelson is in her 25th season as MSUM's head women's basketball coach.
