MSUM Win Streak Capped at Six, Fall to Beavers in Overtime

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead women's basketball held a double digit lead in the third quarter, but would eventually drop an NSIC game to Minot State on Friday evening. The Beavers ended the Dragon win streak at six games, defeating MSUM in overtime, 65-62.

Inside The Game
  • Both offenses would struggle to establish any supremacy in the first quarter with MSUM holding a narrow 9-7 lead. 
  • Ashton Safranski paced the Dragons in the first quarter with a pair of three-pointers. 
  • The second quarter would see the Beavers jump out on a 8-0 run to lead by six points, 15-9. 
  • A three from Tori Ratz and an and-one from Caylin Kelly would pull MSUM to within one point.
  • Ratz would strike again before halftime to put MSUM back in front as the Dragons led 26-21 at the break.
  • Two early three-pointers from Karlee Fisher would expand MSUM's lead to nine points in the third quarter. 
  • Kelly would score again in the paint to push the Dragon lead to double figures with less than five minutes to play in the third frame (35-24).
  • MSUM would lead by eight points after three quarters of play as Fisher scored seven point in the third period alone. 
  • Fisher would hit her third triple of the contest early in the final quarter to keep the Dragons in front by six points. 
  • From there, Minot State guard Sydney Gustavsson would get hot, nailing two triples to even the count at 46 points. 
  • Minot State would use defense to lead by four points with under two minutes to play. 
  • Down the stretch, Abby Berge and Terryn Johnson would convert at the free throw line to tie the game again (51-51). 
  • While both squads had chances to win the game with under a minute left, the score would remain tied after 40 minutes. 
  • In the extra session, both teams would come ablaze, highlighted by threes from Berge and Ashley Fritz. 
  • After the Berge three, Minot State would close the contest on a 5-1 run to claim a win, 65-62.

The last time the Dragons were denied a seventh straight win was when the 6-0 Dragons fell 62-60 in overtime to California St. San Marcos Nov. 28, 2019 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The last time the Dragons fell at home after winning six straight was in a 65-59 loss to St. Cloud St. on December 11, 2015.
