Opening Tip
Quick Hits... MSUM would defeat Wayne State in their first meeting of the season back on January 6. The Dragons beat the Wildcats 80-68 and extended their win streak over WSC to 13 games. The Dragons have also defeated the Vikings already this season on January 5, an 83-74 win. MSUM has won the previous three games against Augie.
Who Needs The 'Shine'...Junior guard Ja'Kair Sanchez turned in another week of phenomenal performances for the Dragons. Sanchez dropped 26 points on 15th-ranked Minot State last Thursday, including the game-winning three-pointer with 0.06 remaining. The junior would score 13 more points in MSUM's win over Mary on Saturday. Over the two games, Sanchez shot 50 percent from the floor (14-28) and 100 percent from long range. In the last five games, the Syracuse, N.Y., native has averaged 21.2 points per game for the Dragons with a 53.5 percent shooting clip.
Take A Bow...MSUM will utilize Saturday's contest against Augustana to honor their senior leaders. Forward Dane Zimmer and guard Gabe Myren will be recognized prior to the start of the contest. Zimmer enters the weekend 24 rebounds shy of 1,000 for his career, which would make him just the third player in program history to accrue over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Myren will be long remembered as one of the best on-ball defenders in MSUM history, racking up 83 career steals in 78 games played. He will also conclude his career with a 51 percent lifetime field goal percentage. The Dragons will also honor student assistant coach Jacob Sobolik, who has been in the role since the 2020-21 season.
Not Skipping A Beat...Junior guard JaMir Price returned from injury last Thursday against Minot State and did not miss a beat. Price scored 16 points on 42.8 percent shooting against the Beavers. He also pulled in seven rebounds. Price would score eight points including a three-pointer against Mary on Saturday.
Unblemished Jenny...Center Jacob Jennissen scored a collegiate-best 15 points against Mary on Saturday. Jennissen scored in bunches in the game and helped MSUM race out to an early lead and not look back. In the contest, Jennissen made all seven of his field goal attempts which included a three-pointer early in the first half. The 7-footer also had multiple slam dunks in the victory.
Quietly Dominant...Sophomore Logan Kinsey played two of his best games of the season last week for MSUM. Kinsey scored 20 points with eight rebounds in the win over Minot State. Of those eight boards, six were offensive, all of which leading to second chance points for MSUM. Kinsey scored 13 points with six more rebounds on Saturday.
What They Do Well...While Wayne State enters Nemzek Fieldhouse on Friday with a three-game losing streak, they are still stiff on defense. The Wildcats bolster the second-best defense in the NSIC this season, allowing only 68.6 points per game to opponents. The Vikings are playing their best basketball of the season, having won seven of their last 10 games. Since falling to the Dragons on January 5, Augie is averaging 82.5 points per game including three games of over 90 points.
Tim Bergstraser is in his second season as MSUM's head coach.
