Shyrone Kemp, Braxton Bruer Sweep NSIC Track & Field Athlete of the Year Awards

| By:
BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead seniors Shyrone Kemp and Braxton Bruer have swept the NSIC's postseason awards. Kemp was named the conference's indoor Field Athlete of the Year while Bruer was named Track Athlete of the Year.

It is the first time since 2011 that the Dragons have swept both major awards and only the second occurrence in program history. Derek Bredy and Anthony Enyi collected both Athlete of the Year awards for MSUM in 2011. Kemp becomes MSUM's first indoor Field Athlete of the Year since Brian Huber in 2016. Bruer is the first indoor Track Athlete of the Year winner since the aforementioned Bredy in 2011.

Kemp turned in one of the most historic performances in recent memory at the NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships last weekend. The senior earned All-NSIC distinction in the long jump on Friday with a top mark of 24-11.75 (7.61m), a new personal best for the standout. Kemp currently holds the third-best indoor long jump in Division II this season. He only continued his dominance on day two of the conference meet with a pair of NSIC championships in both high jump and triple jump. Kemp had a top clearance of 6-10.75 (2.10m) to win the high jump and mark a new personal best. Kemp concluded his meet with his fifth straight NSIC indoor title in triple jump, winning with a mark of 51-10.5 (15.81m), which is currently the second-best in Division II. The Jones Town, Bahamas, native was the NSIC's high point scorer at the conference meet, tallying 26 points by himself. Kemp was also the indoor high point scorer at the 2022 conference meet.

Bruer collected his third straight indoor conference championship in the 800m at the NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships with a winning time of 1:55.44. The senior set the MSUM school record for the indoor 800m back on February 3 with a time of 1:49.29 (converted from 1:50.85) with the mark being the fifth-best 800m run in Division II this season. He also reset the school's indoor 600m run (1:18.52) record on February 10. Bruer was also instrumental in earning All-NSIC distinction for the Dragon distance medley relay squad, who finished runner-up with a time of 10:08.55. The West Fargo, N.D., native finished sixth overall in the conference mile run with a finals time of 4:16.62, a new personal best. Finally, Bruer competed on MSUM's 4x400m relay team that narrowly missed All-NSIC distinction, finishing with a time of 3:20.60.

Both Kemp and Bruer will compete for the Dragons at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships which begin on Friday, March 8 in Pittsburg, Kansas.
