MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead tennis will compete in its final event of the fall season on Saturday as the Dragons play host to Minnesota Crookston in dual action. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Concordia College's outdoor tennis complex in Moorhead.
MSUM last played at the ITA Central Region Fall Championships where a small contingent competed in both singles and doubles play.
Luzmary Diaz Castillo would kick off singles play for the Dragons, meeting up with Arkansas Tech's Elis Gergel in the round of 64. Diaz Castillo would turn in a grinding effort in a first set win, topping Gergel 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreak included. While the junior would fall in the second set, she would rally back to advance following a 10-5 win during the final set. Diaz Castillo would fall in the round of 32 to Nebraska Kearney's Fabiana Gamboa (6-1, 6-1).
Shaelyn Johnson would also see success to open her singles competition at the tournament. Taking on Missouri Western's Maeva Roguet, Johnson was able to grab an impressive straight sets victory. Johnson won the first set 6-2 before clawing for a 7-6 win in set two, which included a 7-4 tiebreak. To close her tournament, Johnson fell in the round of 32 to Northwest Missouri State's Marielena Muench (6-2, 6-0).
The wins for Diaz Castillo and Johnson were the first ITA wins in Dragon tennis history.
In doubles action, the team of
Sophia Felderman and
